Secondary Division G. R. PALKAR Primary School and Abhijat Secondary School

Poorva Mhalagi

Divison In-Charge

The foundation of a good school is knowledgeable and friendly teachers, enthusiastic students and supportive parents. Hence, we believe that the focussed development of these foundation elements is equally important.

The teacher has the power to positively channelise the students’ enthusiasm, courage, self-confidence and determination. For this, the teacher should be balanced, trustworthy and strong-willed. They should use various techniques to gain mastery over their subject. Most importantly, they should look at the learning process with positivity and unconditional love. By combining tradition and modernization, the teacher gives direction to the whole school as an alternative to teaching. This creates thoughtful and intelligent students.

This is the aim of our school

Our Initiatives

Mother and Daughter Mehendi

The importance of henna or Mehendi in Indian culture is scientific as well as emotional. On auspicious occasions, drawing designs on hand has importance similar to kumkum tilak on the forehead. On the occasion of Mother and Daughter Mehendi, school students draw Mehendi designs on their mother’s hands. By applying Mehendi on the hands of a mother those toil for the children, it is as if the children acknowledge their mother’s importance  and her efforts. In Maharashtra, it is a tradition to draw Mehendi on the hands on Nagpanchami. This competition held on the same day, highlights maternal love.

River cleaning campaign

The river and its biodiversity is studied theoretically through textbooks. But learning by doing, through actual action, is more important at the school level. If the student becomes aware of the environment and the need to protect trees, air, water, rivers in it,  then the future of the country would be bright. That is why activities like ‘Nadi Swachhta Abhiyan’ are planned in our school.

Environment Club

The Environment Club was established in the school to create awareness towards various environmental factors. Under this initiative, fertilizer is produced from wet waste. Small plants are cultivated from seeds which are presented to the guests in various programs in the school.  The students have presented the project of making fertilizer in a science exhibition to various guests. The collection and management of wet and dry waste and environmental balance through the same is studied and demonstrated by the self-motivated students.

Language Club

The Sahitya Mandal or Language Club was inaugurated in the school by the senior litterateur Mr. Rajiv Tambe. The students of this club meet once a week. Activities such as discussion, book reading, expression of opinions through writing about the  new and old books are going on in the language club. Supplementary activities like appreciation of poetry and pros, solving crosswords and various linguistic puzzles are also conducted. Retired senior teacher Honorable Veenatai Patankar with the help of the language teacher, guides the students in the club activities.

Dinner in Moonlight

As soon as the first semester exams are over, the Diwali vacation begins. This activity takes place before Diwali holidays. Dinner in Moonlight is a beautiful experience for children. On the evening of the final day of the exam, students come to school wearing nice new clothes. In small groups students paint greeting cards, make sky lanterns and garlands. Some groups are active in food preparation as the evening meal is prepared by the students. There is also a movie suitable for children. After the movie, all the students line up and roam on the roads near the school. They enjoy this walk in the moonlight with the full moon in the clear sky of the month of Ashwin. Then, after eating the food prepared by the fello students, receiving the blessings of the teachers, and greeting each other for the upcoming Diwali celebrations, the children go home happily. It is not a Diwali party, but a cultural event of Diwali dinner in the moonlight of Ashwin celebrated in a Marathi school that emphasizes the education in the mother tongue. It’s a festival that fosters mutual affection, savors the arts, and gives interesting pleasure!

Samaj Rakshabandhan

All the students prepare the rakhi in the school. It is a part of the work experience. When the rakhis are ready, the students go door to door in the residential complexes around the school premises. They interact with the senior citizens by presenting them the Rakhi. All the citizens living around the school premises are in a way the security cover of these students. This activity cultivates gratitude towards the society.

Consciousness towards science

In order to develop a scientific approach among the students, theoretical studies should be combined with projects and experiments. Seminars, introduction to new disciplines of science, interaction with expert researchers, visits to institutes like Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) widen the knowledge chamber of the students. This naturally increases the curiosity of the students. The best projects from the experiments and projects conducted throughout the year are presented in the science exhibition organized on the Science Day. A workshop on technical subjects like robotics is conducted by the school fraternity. The idea behind all such activities is to lay the foundation of logical thinking and awareness of technology.
